Meditation has no goal. The beauty of this is that whatever happens while you are sitting in meditation is exactly what is supposed to happen. Often we have expectations of what our meditation experience should look like. But in fact whatever occurs during meditation is exactly as it should be. We are simply witnessing awareness and that might include any number of things such as any physical sensations we might feel, a barking dog in the neighbourhood or a car horn. Or if you are at my house that a might include a cat wandering around me while I sit in silence or meowing at the closed door if I chose to keep it closed. Either way it is a distraction that we simply need to acknowledge and then return to our breath and focus. As many times as your mind may wander keep returning to your breath (or mantra) and this will build and support your practice. Don't be hard on yourself. If you have chosen to sit in silence then you have already moved toward honouring your self-care. Continue your practice. Whether that is 5 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour. Each moment devoted toward sitting in silence promotes our wellness. And your wellness is what matters on all levels of mind, body and soul.

Meditation
What is meditation and what are the benefits of practice? These questions are often asked and I would like to explore just a bit of that here with you.
Meditation comes in many forms although each path leads to a similar end. The one that I will refer to here is the one where we are witnessing awareness by sitting in silence. Although I state silent, it may also involve a mantra or may involve breath work. There are various traditions that have ancient roots, but the common theme all leads back to finding stillness of the mind. Meditation relaxes the body, brings clarity and steadiness of mind, and opens the heart. It is often seen as a disconnecting from our moment to moment activity and drifting to the space between our thoughts. It is also seen as 'one-ness' in the progressive quieting of the fluctuations of the mind.
The benefits of meditation may include :
Stress release
Calmness and inner quiet
Focused concentration
Provide energy
Allow for living in the present moment
All of these benefits will also translate into many health benefits as research studies have shown. There is mounting evidence in the medical establishment that when the mind is relaxed, the body seems less susceptible to disease and better able to heal itself.
A meditation practice is a positive way to provide self care in these current times of busy and often chaotic lifestyles. It can be a great way to start your day, a mini-retreat during your day or an end of the day time to let go.
